So, with AI slop replacing all useful information on the Internet and news websites changing stories and deleting old stories all the time, I decided it's time to take one of my old projects out of the closet and start a personal Web Archive. I've played with both ArchiveBox and Wayback a few years ago but never got to make a choice on either of them, At some point I also tried SingleFile (https://www.getsinglefile.com) which was also neat, but it can't be automated AFAIK. Looking back to this now, I noticed both ArchiveBox and Wayback haven't seen a release since 2024. While they are probably stable software, the web has changed in the past couple years with new media formats and likely q

I started getting into photography around 2008 and back then I followed several forums, blogs and flickr accounts, which heavily influenced me to get my first camera. I loved the community aspect but also the format. People could post a single photo, a photo album, a blog post where they would mix photos with some storytelling or a technical review, etc. You could also usually click on the pictures to see them in full size, which to me is a completely different experience than seeing a small file.  Then, as sensors and displays got better, storage got cheaper and the internet got faster, we moved to social media and its focus on tiny compressed files with aspect ratio restrictions that are

I love listening to podcasts and have tried off-and-on to backup the ones I care about over the years. In theory, this should be easy because of how podcasts work with RSS feeds, you literally download the episode when you listen to it. In practice, I'm often listening on my phone and it's not easy to copy episodes off to my NAS. I've tried software like AudioBookshelf, but that requires you to manually download all the episodes you want to listen to on the server ahead of time. You also have to use an app compatible with AudioBookshelf. Most of the apps I used (on iOS) were fine for audiobooks, but podcasts really felt like an afterthought. The privacy and peace of mind that it provides, paired with the feature-set that is constantly being updated makes it a no-brainer for anyone looking for a little extra privacy in their digital life. Definitely can be better. The biggest complain is bad face recognition. Its basically nonexistent. If Synology hardware is not capable producing good face/ object detection, maybe offload that workload to a desktop app? I mean you already have one , Just add feature to rescan library for face and object tagging. I really like synology photos, but cmon make photos better, this is one of the reasons alot of people even buy it. Now you make it really shine and the market is yours.

Ente was the killer app that got me away from Google. Safe, secure and way beyond functional. Typically when you have private alternatives they lack functionality or feel locked in. Ente has better features than any other photo backup out hands down. And it is super easy to keep a physical backup of all your photos and it is super simple to use. And it is just getting better!! Give it a shot, you will not be disappointed.

Plan is to run TrueNAS VM on a proxmox and passthrough the HDDs, and use immich or any other self hosting software. I checked some docking solution and found that USB protocol isn't the most stable one as it can frequently disconnect, I would rather not buy something like a Synology or QNAP NAS due to my living conditions (temporary in foreign country and dont want the hassle to move the NAS device) Any recommendations on how can I proceed? I am running a production photo archive using Piwigo, where images are regularly uploaded over FTP in large batches. This is a common and efficient workflow for high volume environments, especially when uploads are automated or handled by external systems. The core issue is that Piwigo still lacks a reliable and maintained mechanism for automatic synchronization of newly uploaded files. After uploading images via FTP, the gallery does not reflect changes unless a manual sync is triggered. For an active photo bank, this is not practical. There are a few existing tools and plugins that attempt to address this, but they appear to be abandoned. Some have not seen updates in close to nine years

Overall, I’m pretty impressed with the synology photos app. It backs up all my photos and videos from my phone to my NAS at home. One major issue and this is a big one. The search feature is nearly unusable. With the advancement of AI this should be something that can easily be added to psychology photos. Searching Apple photos is great on my phone. If I search the synology Photos app, 90% of the time it comes back with nothing. This is the only major downside to using this app I use it so my photos can be backed up and then I can free up space on my phone. But finding a photo by search is nearly impossible. I hope they fix this soon. If they do, I will bump it up to five stars.

I have for some time been looking for a way to replace Google photos. The obvious choice would be immich, but it has the same annoyance as Google Photos because it does not store images in regular file system where I can have folder access and access my images from my photo editing software etc. Does such a thing exist? Bonus points if it can handle video well. EDIT: Thanks for many good suggestions. I will look through them in the coming weeks. Also one thing that is important, is easy sharing of galleries with Friends, family and clients (I don't work as a photographer, but as a freelancer I often need to share images and video)

I'll try to make this as short as possible while including the most detail as well. About a month or so ago, my DS918+'s NIC board (Ethernet ports) fried during a thunderstorm. I looked around for comparable alternatives that would hold my four HDDs formatted with the Synlogy Hybrid RAID (SHR). The best I could find was a used DS1522+, which at the time I understood would decently transcode and be comparable overall. I was wrong. In addition, I just very recently found out just how loose the power outlet is on the back of the NAS. I initially planned on keeping it and getting a mini PC to run and transcode Plex, but now this doesn't seem to be a smart move. My other options to the best of

I have other editing apps, so I’m not here to complain about what I can’t do on the Capture One mobile app that I can do on my desktop. I just wanted a reliable way to see what I’m shooting on my camera immediately on my iPad or iPhone. I haven’t experienced other similar apps for tethering, so I can’t say this is the best. I can however repeat that this is a better solution than Canon’s.

This is a great alternative to Big Tech which is slowly consolidating control over all digital services. I was a long time user of Google Photos and was pulled in originally by their false promise of free, unlimited storage. Now Google Photos caps it at 15GB and constantly reminds you to upgrade and pay them while also adding more and more advertising for other services. Google Photos and iCloud also make it much harder than it needs to be to export your data or back it up to other locations such as an external hard drive. This app on the other hand is transparent with their pricing from the start and make it easy to export your data for back up elsewhere. I also like the grass roots natu

Im going down the rabbithole of wanting to digitize all my old family photos (primarily to use on immich). Theres thousands of them so for sanity sake i was looking at the FastFoto-680W. (no negatives, just prints that I have copies of). I went down the review wormhole a little and found a lot of complaints about "scratches" and "depth not good" from it. So then an alternative of the V600 came up. For someone who wants to digitize the photos for family/friends viewing via immich, whats the general suggestion? I want to make sure the qualitys good, it doesnt need to be immaculate for posters and stuff, but im also weighing out the time consideration. Hesitant about sending the photos awa

I only recently downloaded this, so I didn’t have to put up with a lot of the missing features like others did. But honestly, even with some features still missing (many more recently added like smart masking), I honestly think this is a great standalone option for people who only use an iPad. But when I get started editing on the go and get home, exporting my image with edits to my laptop with airdrop is so easy it’s almost unbelievable. Is the app perfect. No. It’s still a little laggy sometimes (M1 iPad Air) though sometimes smooth as butter. And there are a couple features missing still (I’d love the color balance tool). But honestly this is such a small nitpick I don’t even care. So w

Hello! I'm looking for a new NAS to replace my old DS216J, but I have some doubts on which to choose from DS423+ and DS723+. Currently I'm running two 8TB HDDs on Raid1 and it's mainly for storage of our personal files, photos (my wife is a part-time photographer), some music, and very few videos. Currently usage is about 50%. I'm planning to use the new NAS to run a few docker containers like Immich, since we don't want to pay $100 yearly to the G-company for just 2TB. Transcoding is not needed since we don't use Plex. After some research I focused on DS723+ and DS423+. Everybody seems to be recommending 423+ for the 4-bay, but I don't know if I really need that.
