Hi, I have been recently cleaning up the volumes and recreating them after the move to DS425+ from DS224+. While moving stuff around, I had to move shared Docker folders back and forth. Sufficient backup setup for Immich

Hi all!
I have after quite some tinkering managed to setup Immich in parallel with Synology Photos. I have all photos/videos on a 3x4TB SHR1 on my DS423+. I take weekly backups to two external USB-drives that I switch and one always stored in my office (every 3rd month or so). Also I have snapshots running daily.
I am comfortable with the above and my question is about the Immich setup below:
Immich is installed on a single nvme 0.5TB and are accessing the photos on the HDDs as a read only external library. The setup is with docker (Container manager). All uploads to my photo folder are done via Synology Photos. Immich is just for "browsing/searching/albums". I take nightly backups of the

AMD VAAPI encoding fails during software-decode fallback due to missing format=nv12 filter

### I have searched the existing issues, both open and closed, to make sure this is not a duplicate report.

### The bug
When using AMD GPU (Radeon 780M) for hardware acceleration, hardware encoding crashes if the source video requires software decoding (e.g., an older MPEG4 codec video).
When Immich falls back to software decoding and attempts hardware encoding, it passes the yuv420p pixel format directly to the h264_vaapi encoder. The AMD Mesa driver rejects yuv420p and requires nv12, resulting in an invalid VASurfaceID error and crashing the transcoding task before it ultimately falls back to pure CPU transcoding.

The primary purpose of a backup is to restore data from it. However, in practice, Immich is horrible at restoring photos to your phone. Consider this scenario: you purchase a new iPhone and use your own Immich server to back up your old iPhone’s photos. You want some of those photos on your new iPhone, so you open the Immich app, connect it to your new phone, and press the download button on a few photos to create a wallpaper on your new iPhone. Surprisingly, the app is coded so poorly that it doesn’t exclude the photos you restored or downloaded from Immich to your new phone. I'm running into an issue where some videos, but not all, stutter when viewing from the web. By stutter, I mean it looks like it freezes every half second for a moment and this lasts throughout the entire video, which makes for a very jerky watching experience. There's no indication the video is buffering, and the file size does not seem to matter (can happen with both large and small video files).
If a video is affected, the stutter happens whether I am hovering over the thumbnail or clicking into the video. The video file itself is fine - it plays back without issue when downloaded. Similarly, viewing the same video on the app does not have any stutter either.

I've read that running Immich on a Synology NAS would be able to work. I've also seen WD my cloud home but I've seen some bad reviews on that.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

HDD suggestion for DS224+ - 3rd party

Hello! I bought a Synology DS224+ almost two years ago, and it has worked well, but I'm running out of space. Currently, I'm a little above 50%, but I'm waiting to transfer over 1 TB of data.
I currently have two 8TB IronWolf HDDs, and I was planning to double its capacity. However, according to this, only WD, Seagate, and Toshiba are compatible: https://www.synology.com/en-us/compatibility?search_by=drives&model=DS224%2B&category=hdds_no_ssd_trim&display_brand=other. I use it for Jellyfin for myself and my family, and I recently started using Immich. I also want my own storage and backup for data. My question is: Are any HDDs compatible with Synology, even if they are not liste

Hey, complete noob here, I've been reading, watching videos, and lurking in these subs to try to learn. I've come up with a plan and just want to make sure it at least kind of makes sense to people who know what they're doing. The last part of hardware is coming in the mail on Monday, and then the build will start.
Based on reviews and guides, and the fact that it's GUI friendly I'm planning to use UnRaid and run everything in it's own docker. I want to run jellyfin, immich, navidrome, deluge plus the usual arr stack to help automate some things in the future.
For the storage set up:
2x 500gb sata ssd in mirror for app data
2tb gen 3 nvme for ingest, immich, navidrome

Hi folks,
I built **Borg UI**, a **self-hosted** **web** **interface** for **BorgBackup** to manage **backups**, **restores**, and **scheduling** without the CLI.
I had been using **BorgBackup** via **command line** for a while to create backups of my Immich library (self-hosted photo management tool). It felt very tedious to continuously monitor and maintain, especially via SSH. Since I already run everything in Docker, I decided to **build a web UI** to simplify the workflow.
**It runs as a Docker container (no config needed) and includes:**
* Backups and restores with visual scheduling
* Live progress tracking with notifications
* Archive browsing like regular folders

Advice for Mini PC for my new server setup

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some advice on buying a mini PC for my homelab/server setup.
Right now I have a Synology DS218+, but I’ve decided to keep it as a NAS / media only. I plan to move all my current Docker containers from the Synology to a dedicated mini PC.
At the moment I’m running:
* Audiobookshelf
* Calibre
* Calibre-Web
* Lubelogger
* Home Assistant
* Home Assistant plugins (OTBR and Matter)
* Mealie
* MeTube
* Pi-hole
* one of my apps
* Plex
* Socket Proxy
* Speedtest
* Transmission
* Vikunja
The most important services for me are probably Pi-hole, Plex, and Audiobookshelf. On top of that, I definitely want to add Immich with facial recognition and paperless-gx or somethin

I want basic NAS storage/file safety and will be hooking up to it via wireguard (and maybe later tailscale if i want other folks to have access), but other than that I think it'd be fun to start learning docker by being able to use docker containers and whatnot. Is it a good idea to use docker to run stuff like immich and pterodactyl for minecraft servers? or are there better systems for this sort of stuff.

Noob question, and sorry if this is the wrong place to ask!! I have 2 ssd and one hdd, and want to add more hdds to my setup, but I lack the physical space in my pc to put them inside. Plan is to run TrueNAS VM on a proxmox and passthrough the HDDs, and use immich or any other self hosting software.
I checked some docking solution and found that USB protocol isn't the most stable one as it can frequently disconnect, I would rather not buy something like a Synology or QNAP NAS due to my living conditions (temporary in foreign country and dont want the hassle to move the NAS device)
Any recommendations on how can I proceed? Thanks

Phenomenal use case and having the ownership feeling of having your photos hosted and not rely on anyone else is awesome. Also the speed and quality of viewing the photos is a big change from cloud services where the photos are loaded in high quality rather than having to buffer.

The app looks beautiful! The main feature seems to be hit or miss. Some photos videos upload while others do nothing when I click the upload button. Totally worth 5 stars if that feature would just work. I understand it takes time to develop this to work well for everyone. Thank you devs for what you have done so far. Look forward to future updates.
Update: I believe the issue I described only happens with photos/videos that are part of a family shared folder. It would be nice if there was at least some helpful errors or maybe a disclaimer. Also the icon on the photos I already uploaded for backup seems to always show us not backed up.

Hi everyone
I want to get a simple 2 drive NAS that is reliable and just works, was leaning towards the Synology DS224+ / DS425+, also wanted to manage photo and video libraries with face / object recognition however may have to play with Immich for best results it sounds like.
I heard Synology keep deprecating features and also attempted vendor lock in for the HD's, however despite this are they still the best choice for someone who wants a reliable software experience that just works?
Advice appreciated :)

I've been super happy with Synology, I love the DSM, app suites, and overall experience, so I feel pretty good about staying with Synology vs another brand (UGreen, etc) and I'm ok paying a bit of premium.
